These sites save energy because all screens are predominantly black; a monitor requires more energy to display a white pixel than a black pixel background. This is
true because, from my own observation, my laptop battery lasts a lot longer if I lower the brightness of the screen. By changing to one/all of these sites,
you can save about 2.39 million Watt-hours per login (and save
750 Megawatt-hours a

It's just colour. If it means saving energy, why must that be a problem?
Energy consumption is a bigger problem than a mismatch in your colour preference. If you consider the eye candy cost you are paying in environment terms, it is really worth it.
(2) Change the common white background in Word to black!
In 4 simple steps! (if you're using Word 2007 and above)
(3) Desktop background ➔ Black/Dark coloured
